All about Ruffian

|
The BoatThe first sail we had in Ruffian was bringing her home from the Shetland Islands to Scarborough in which we discovered two things, firstly, the pure delight of sailing such a fast sea friendly boat and secondly, all the leaks !! With our first North Sea Race only six weeks away, work began on fixing all the small problems we had encountered thus far (the bigger ones would have to wait!!). The rest of the season was spent overhauling, replacing and repairing as much equipment as possible. Ruffian had always been fast off the wind, but wouldn’t point and was a handful when fully powered up, always rounding up and having to continually spill wind off the main. A trip to the Southampton Boat Show in September (by sea naturally) cured all that with the purchase of a new main and genoa by UK McWilliams, which completely transformed the sailing capabilities pointing 10 degrees to 15 degrees higher and making her less of a handful. During the Autumn she was lifted out and after seven weeks of work on her underwater profiles, re-antifouling etc. she was ready to go. Technical StuffBuilt in 1983 by Marine Projects and designed by David Thomas, the Sigma 36 is the big sister of the very successful Sigma 33.
The electrical system is backed up by 3x110 amp/hour batteries, which supplies the full range of instruments, AIS, GPS, Radar, Garman Chart Plotter, Yeoman Paper Chart Plotter and on board Computer. All control lines are lead into the cockpit to assist with short handed sailing. New sails in 2006 by UK McWilliams transformed the performance. |
